An Indian woman, a Japanese woman, and a Syrian woman, all training to be doctors at Women’s Medical College of Philadelphia, 1880s. (Image courtesy Legacy Center, Drexel University College of Medicine Archives, Philadelphia, PA. Image #p0103) (x)

The Indian woman, Dr. Anandi Gopal Joshi, was the first Indian woman to earn a degree in Western medicine, and also believed to be the first Hindu woman to set foot on American soil.
The Japanese woman, Dr. Kei Okami, was the first Japanese woman to obtain a degree in Western Medicine.
The Syrian woman is Dr. Sabat Islambooly.  Her name is spelled incorrectly on that photograph.
For those interested, here’s more information on other women of color who attended and graduated from Women’s Medical College of Philadelphia in the past, with a focus on the Japanese-American women they accepted during the US WW2 internment of Japanese-Americans.

Beyonce is a rare female pop icon with a massive following of girls who calls herself a feminist, and rather than accepting that feminism and gender equality is her political persuasion, a lot of feminists (just Google it) respond by wanting to debate the issue.
True, Queen Bey’s performance has some flaws (cough cough “Eat the cake, Anna Mae”), but a) who among us is a perfect feminist? and b)  couldn’t feminist energies and conversations be better applied toward  reaching out to those legions of girls who are listening to Beyonce sample Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, share her own struggles with body image, and generally encourage them to stand up, be strong and run the world?
PS - I’ve been reading a lot about Beyonce today.

I’m going to need some folks at work to read this

LOVELY OF COLOR QUEER NEEDS YOUR HELP (please signal boost if you can’t donate ANY AMOUNT NO MATTER HOW SMALL HELPS!)

http://www.gofundme.com/nicotopsurgery

Nico, the tenderest queer I know, is trying to raise funds to get their top surgery. For those who don’t know, top surgery is an excessively expensive and immensely relieving process.

Nico spends their time working for a non-profit dedicated to transforming systems of oppression that affect farmworker communities. When Nico is not working, they spend their time painting lovely watercolors, reading subversive literature and making everyone swoon.

Top surgery is an emotional, spiritual and physical necessity for this fine queer. The cost of this surgery is upwards of 7000 dollars. This is unobtainable with non-profit wages. Please donate whatever you can to help ease the financial burden of this life saving and altering procedure!

"Your highness" is gender neutral.

So you know, if you’re ever confused about my pronouns.

That’ll work.

I’m using this at work when people fuck up my pronouns.

I painted these portraits as a very fond tribute to the characters whose story essentially defined my life between the ages of 10 and 15. They are available individually or all together in my INPRNT shop!

have you ever equated female to having a vagina and/or breasts or being male to having a penis/pecs/testicles? you’ve contributed to transphobia.

have you ever said anything about men not being able to have periods? you’ve contributed to transphobia.

have you ever laughed at a “man in a dress” joke? you’ve contributed to transphobia.

have you ever invaded a space meant for trans people? you’ve contributed to transphobia.

have you ever invalidated someone’s gender? you’ve contributed to transphobia.

have you ever compared the systematic oppression trans people face every day to a few blogs online that poke fun at cis people and point out what cis people have done to trans people? you’ve contributed to transphobia.

have you ever said or did anything that suggested that being gay was a method of birth control? you’ve contributed to transphobia.

just because you’re not openly hateful towards trans people doesn’t at all mean that you aren’t transphobic or that you don’t contribute to transphobia on a daily basis.
